The Court of Appeal has lowered the sentence of a market gardener from Perros-Guirec (Côtes-d'Armor) accused of "irregular waste management" and "irregular disposal of waste containing organic pollutants".

An anonymous statement had reported in 2018 regular fires on the land of the operator, reports France 3 Bretagne.

Biodegradable materials

A gendarme had discovered burnt remains of cardboard, fabric and plastic waste there as well as what he described as a "depot of rotting tomatoes".

The farmer had explained that these fruits were ultimately used as compost for his fields.

He had denied any pollution, explaining that it was a biodegradable material.

He had been sentenced to six months in prison suspended and a total of 15,000 euros fine during the first trial last March in Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d'Armor).

On appeal in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), the defendant received a three-month suspended prison sentence and fines totaling 10,000 euros.
