This week's shelling of buildings in the breakaway republic of Transnistria has raised concerns about rising tensions outside Ukraine's borders. Transnistria is an autonomous region with just under half a million inhabitants.
The region declared independence in 1990 and has since been ruled by separatists backed by Moscow.
