There has been a storm around regional director Anders Byström's handling of the agreement with former health director Maria Söderkvist.

Anders Byström first claimed that he had a verbal agreement with Maria Söderkvist that she would receive an annual salary after she left her job in the Jämtland Härjedalen region.

Byström assured that Maria Söderkvist resigned herself and that the sum of 1.4 million was a compensation for time worked.

Forced to admit

The reactions were strong, mainly among employees in the region.

Byström now admits that he was the one who urged Maria Söderkvist to quit.

Söderkvist thus did not resign himself and compensation is thus to be regarded as severance pay.

Länstidningen was the first to tell.

- It was I who said that it is no longer possible, says Anders Byström.

I have to admit that.

This is unfortunate because everyone involved made it happen.

But it has been very difficult circumstances.

The agreement was discussed during the regional council.

- It feels uncomfortable, says Anders Byström.

I do not think personal matters fit here.
