In Moldova, recent tensions in the separatist region of Transnistria have raised fears of an imminent conflict with Russia in this small country neighboring Ukraine.

Courrier International

explains that this territory, not recognized by the UN, is home to a population of 500,000 people, mostly pro-Russian, and has been claiming independence since a conflict with Moldova in 1993. One thousand five hundred Russian soldiers are permanently stationed in this region.
