The syndrome usually shows its first signs at a young age.

- They usually appear at some point during childhood, adolescence or early adulthood.

But it can happen later as well, says psychologist Mårten Tyrberg.

Diagnosis 

The psychologist explains that the assessment takes place through a conversation and various diagnostic tools, but before that many people realize when it is time to seek help when they do not get their everyday life together.

- For example, you do not have time to go to school or work to get stuck at home when you take a shower.

Or you can not leave home because you are not sure that the door is locked.

Sometimes it can be relatives, parents, siblings or friends who notice that you do not really function in life, says Mårten Tyrberg.

About the phrase "I have a little OCD" 

According to the psychologist, those who are diagnosed with the syndrome have a major problem in everyday life and it can lead to enormous suffering.

The expression can generate discomfort. 

- It can be experienced as diminishing or offensive for someone who is really fighting against OCD when a person who only cleans too much from time to time also says he has OCD, Mårten Tyrberg points out.
