Accommodation in school gymnasiums, hotels, in the youth center, with private individuals and in former barracks buildings - in the Main-Kinzig district there are many possibilities for accommodating Ukrainian war refugees.

Since the beginning of the war, around 2,000 people from the Ukraine have been registered with the immigration office of the district and the city of Hanau.

According to District Administrator Thorsten Stolz (SPD), hundreds more war refugees are expected to be assigned to the district by the initial reception center in Gießen in the next few weeks – around 250 people per week.

In order to be able to cope with the influx in a short time, two large accommodations are currently being prepared: the gymnasium of the secondary school in Birstein and the multi-purpose hall in Hanau-Mittelbuchen.

Both offer space for 200 people and are equipped with sanitary facilities.

Also, there are ways to prepare the food for the Ukrainians.

The sports hall of the Bruchköbel school center and the Ronneburg youth center are also planned as accommodation.

A security concept was developed

Lockable residential cabins for families with several camp beds, a table, chairs and cots were created in the hall in Birstein.

Among other things, the refugees will find an initial supply of personal care products for children and adults there.

About 40 percent of the registered Ukraine refugees are minors, says Silvio Franke-Kißner, head of the Office for Security, Order, Migration and Integration.

His job is to take care of the medical care and further support of the people.

For the people accommodated in the Birsteiner refugee accommodation, there will be medical consultation hours on site with the opportunity to be tested for Corona and to be vaccinated.

The clerks at the immigration authorities will also offer office hours there.

Employees from the Office for Intercultural Affairs provide services such as language mediators and childcare.

A safety concept was developed to ensure the safety of people in the hall.

In Hanau-Mittelbuchen, too, a piece of privacy is created with partition walls.

There are 50 small living units with furniture, electricity and basic equipment.

Children's play corners, baby changing rooms, a laundry room with washing machine and dryer, a reading corner and a WLAN network have been set up.

Among other things, security forces, social workers and childcare workers are available.

Efforts are being made to make the buildings habitable

The former American housing estate Sportsfield Housing in Hanau-Wolfgang has a large capacity for accommodating refugees.

Some of the buildings have been used as central accommodation for refugees from many countries for years, and the first Ukrainians are also quartered there.

At the request of Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky and First District Councilor Susanne Simmler (both SPD), the federal government has now opened the vacant part of Sportsfield Housing on Aschaffenburger Straße to Ukraine refugees.

The Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Bima) issued a transfer agreement so that the city and district can also accommodate those seeking help in the buildings of the former residential complex at short notice.

In 2015, these apartment buildings were used as the state's initial reception facility.

The seven buildings have a total floor space of more than 15,000 square meters.

According to the city, work is now being done at full speed to make the buildings habitable again and to connect the electricity, gas and water connections.

The city estimates that this part of Sportsfield Housing can house up to 700 refugees.

That also depends on the size of the arriving families.

A decisive advantage is the physical proximity to the municipal initial reception facility, where the appropriate official infrastructure is available and questions such as childcare, medical care and other things can be regulated.

The contact and information points of the city, district and aid organizations are also actively used.

The broad support of citizens, companies, organizations and institutions, trade, crafts, trade and associations is unbroken, according to the city and district.

In the meantime, several convoys with relief supplies have started from the district towards Ukraine, often organized by private initiatives or companies.
