Felipe VI plays the card of transparency.

The royal palace thus announced on Monday that the king of Spain has 2.6 million euros.

The veil is lifted on the royal fortune as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is due to adopt this Tuesday by decree new rules intended to strengthen "transparency, accountability and efficiency" of the Spanish royalty, "in accordance with the principles set out by King » Felipe VI.

On the eve of these new measures, the palace therefore wanted to be exemplary, recalling that Felipe VI had "taken the path of modernizing royalty, in order to make it worthy of the respect and trust of its citizens".

“His Majesty the King, guided by his spirit of service and his civic engagement, today goes beyond his constitutional responsibilities by taking the personal decision to make his assets public”.

Mainly savings accounts

Most of the king's assets, around 2.3 million euros, are deposits in savings accounts of his income for the past 25 years, first as Prince of Asturias and then, since 2014, as king, according to the palace.

The rest being works of art and jewelry.

The palace thus seeks to restore the image of the monarchy.

This has indeed been undermined by the affairs of King Juan Carlos, leading Felipe VI to distance himself, withdrawing from his father, in March 2020, his annual endowment of nearly 200,000 euros and announcing that he renounced his inheritance.

Surrounded by scandals and revelations about his lavish lifestyle, Juan Carlos, a central figure in the democratic transition after the death of dictator Franco in 1975, was forced to abdicate in 2014 in favor of his son Felipe VI.

He was suspected of having amassed an occult fortune abroad, in particular thanks to his close relations with the Gulf monarchies.

Despite the closure of legal investigations targeting him in his country, which could have marked his return, Juan Carlos chose to stay in Abu Dhabi where he took refuge.

In December, the Swiss justice had also dismissed the investigation into the assets of the former sovereign in Switzerland, including 100 million dollars paid by Saudi Arabia.
