• In mid-May, the newly elected president will be sworn in at a ceremony at the Élysée Palace.

In addition to writing on a piece of paper, the president will, among other things, participate in a military ceremony.

• At the same time, a new government, appointed by the president, takes office.

• Elections will be held again in June - this time to Parliament.

Among other things, they decide which laws are to be enacted in the country and have the power to remove the government.

Thus, it is not a matter of course that the President will have the support of Parliament.

Candidates must be supported by at least a quarter of those eligible to vote in their district in order to be elected in the first round.

Otherwise, another round will be held the following weekend, where the candidate who receives the most votes wins.

• The newly elected parliament will take office on 21 June.

• Both the President and Parliament are elected every five years.

The next election will thus be 2027.

Before that, half of the country's senate will be renewed.

However, the senators are not directly elected by the people.

Instead, they are appointed by, among others, local politicians.

It happens every three years, next time will be 2023.
