Uganda: President Museveni receives Paul Kagame, a new sign of rapprochement

This is Rwandan President Paul Kagame's first visit to Uganda since March 2018: the head of state met his counterpart Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe on Sunday.

The visit on the occasion of the birthday of Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of the Ugandan president and commander of the army, is a new step in the beginning of reconciliation between the two countries, started since the beginning of the year.

In front of the presidential residence in Entebbe, the Ugandan and Rwandan flags flew side by side this Sunday, in honor of the visit of the Head of State Paul Kagame. 

On Twitter, President Yoweri Museveni claims to have held discussions with his counterpart on regional peace, stability and cooperation, before a large dinner organized to celebrate the birthday of his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

I also held bilateral talks with HE President Paul Kagame on a number of issues, especially on regional peace, stability and cooperation.

I welcome HE Kagame to Uganda.

This is the second time in a few weeks that the two heads of state have met, the latest sign of a warming of relations between Kampala and Kigali, after years of tension during which the two countries accused each other of attempts to destabilization.

, also commander of the Ugandan army, have marked the beginning of a rapprochement between the two countries, such as the reopening of the land borders closed since February 2019, or the expulsion from Entebbe airport in early April by Robert Mukonbozi, a Rwandan opponent in exile.
