The attendance project started a year and a half ago.

Method developers Christina Ivarsson Ålstig and Torbjörn Svensk have helped children as young as 8 years who do not want to go to school.

- It is not easy to meet nine-year-olds who think: "I only make mom and dad sad, why should I live?".

A large part of them are isolated in their rooms, says Christina Ivarsson Ålstig.

High absenteeism

They describe the absence situation as extra high in the primary schools in Nyköping after the pandemic.

To date, they have helped 20 out of 25 children with high absenteeism to partially return to school.

But it is unclear whether the project, which is funded by state funds, will remain after the turn of the year, when the project period expires.

- There is a great need, and it feels meaningful, important and that we make a difference for the children.

So we hope that this project will be permanent, says Torbjörn Svensk.
