"I also know that many of our compatriots voted for me today, not to support the ideas I hold, but to block those of the extreme right. And I want to thank them here and tell them that I have aware that this vote binds me for the years to come," said the re-elected president.

Emmanuel Macron thanked the voters who voted for him on Sunday "not to support" his ideas "but to block those of the far right", adding that he was "aware that this vote obliges him for years to come", during a speech delivered to his supporters from the Champ de Mars in Paris.

The Head of State was re-elected President of the Republic on Sunday against Marine Le Pen, winning between 57.6% and 58.2% of the vote, according to estimates available at 8 p.m.

"I also know that many of our compatriots voted for me today, not to support the ideas I hold, but to block those of the extreme right. And I want to thank them here and tell them that I I am aware that this vote obliges me for the years to come", declared the re-elected president, who arrived on the Champ de Mars surrounded by children and his wife, Brigitte Macron, against a backdrop of Ode to the joy of the 9th Beethoven's symphony, the European anthem.

Disagreements 'must be answered'

The president claimed that the "anger and disagreements" that led to voting for the far-right bill "must find an answer".

"I know that for many of our compatriots, who today chose the extreme right, the anger and disagreements, which led them to vote for this project, must also find an answer. It will be my responsibility and that of those around me," he said.
