Liu Youbin, a spokesman for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said at the meeting that the overall quality of the national ecological environment continued to improve in the first quarter of 2022.

  Liu Youbin introduced that in terms of ambient air conditions, the average number of good days in cities at the prefecture level and above in the first quarter was 83.8%, up 2.9 percentage points year-on-year; the average PM2.5 concentration was 43 micrograms per cubic meter, down 4.4% year-on-year.

The proportion of good days in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding areas increased by 7.4 percentage points year-on-year, and the PM2.5 concentration decreased by 3.1% year-on-year.

However, the proportion of good days in the Yangtze River Delta region and the Fenwei Plain decreased by 5.2 percentage points and 7.8 percentage points year-on-year, and the PM2.5 concentration increased by 7.0% and 13.6% year-on-year, respectively.

  In terms of water ecological environment, in the first quarter, the proportion of surface water sections with water quality I-III was 88.2%, a year-on-year increase of 5.2 percentage points; the proportion of sections with inferior water quality was 1.0%, a year-on-year decrease of 1.1 percentage points.

The proportion of water quality sections of major rivers in key river basins was 89.7%, a year-on-year increase of 5.0 percentage points; the proportion of sub-category V water quality sections was 0.8%, a year-on-year decrease of 1.4 percentage points.

  In the first quarter, the national soil environmental conditions were generally stable, and soil environmental risks were basically controlled.

The daytime and nighttime total compliance rates of various functional areas of the acoustic environment were 96.5% and 87.7%, up 0.1 percentage points and 3.4 percentage points year-on-year, respectively.

Nuclear and radiation safety has been effectively guaranteed, and environmental emergencies have been properly handled.
