In May, Börje Andersson and his neighbors in the village of Mellböda will receive iodine tablets and information about nuclear power readiness in the mailbox.

The whole of northern Öland, from Byxelkrok to Löttorp, is included in the updated emergency preparedness zone in Kalmar County from 1 July.

- Finally, there will be a message on the issue.

We have been waiting for that for so long, but it has not been decisive for us.

We have simply trusted security, says Börje Andersson.

Called for plan twelve years ago

As early as 2010, Börje Andersson, as an active center politician in Borgholm municipality, called for a crisis preparedness plan for northern Öland in the event of a nuclear accident on the mainland.

- We feel a little vulnerable.

Not least since there have been accidents in the world, then it becomes a cause for concern.

We wanted to know what to do if something happens at OKG.

And this is especially true of us who have animals, what should we do then?

Should we shoot them or should we just leave the island, says Börje Andersson.

Iodine tablets in the mailbox

But the county administrative board, which is responsible for emergency preparedness in the event of a nuclear accident, then replied to the center politicians that Öland did not belong to the internal emergency preparedness zone and that there was therefore no plan for the island, except that there was a radiation measurement system.

One year later, in 2011, the accident occurred in Fukushima in Japan, which set the ball rolling for a new investigation by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.

Now the investigation is complete and then the message is crystal clear: northern Öland will be included in the outer emergency preparedness zone.

A total of 22,000 households in Kalmar County will receive iodine tablets, radio receivers and information on what the increased preparedness means.
