The UNESCO-United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has announced that the World Heritage Committee meeting scheduled for June in Russia has been postponed due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which decides on a new World Heritage Site, was scheduled to meet once a year in Kazan, central Russia in June, but UNESCO told NHK on the 21st that it would be indefinite. It was revealed that it was postponed at.



Regarding the reason, UNESCO states that "this decision was against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine."



At the UNESCO Executive Committee, which was held until the middle of this month, there were voices against the holding in Russia, mainly in Europe and the United States.



There were no plans to discuss new World Heritage candidates recommended by Japan at this meeting.



The World Heritage Committee has been unable to meet due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and last year it was held online for the first time in two years.
