Russia tests intercontinental ballistic missile, "unparalleled"

The Russian army announced that it had conducted the first successful test of the Sarmat ICBM, a new generation weapon with a very long range, which Russian President Vladimir Putin described as "unparalleled".

"This is truly a unique weapon that will enhance the military capability of our armed forces, ensure Russia's security in the face of external threats, and make those who are trying to threaten our country with unruly and aggressive rhetoric to think twice," Putin said in a televised speech.

"I confirm that components and parts of the national industry were used exclusively for the production of Sarmat," Putin was quoted by AFP as saying.

According to the Russian president, the fifth generation of the heavy intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" is capable of "outperforming all modern anti-aircraft systems".

This weapon is part of another series of missiles that Vladimir Putin presented in 2018 as "invisible".

These missiles include the Kinzhal and Avangard hypersonic missiles.

The Sarmat missile, which weighs more than 200 tons, is supposed to outperform the Vojvoda missile, which has a range of 11,000 km.

In 2019, Putin said the Sarmat missile "has no limits when it comes to range" and could "hit targets by crossing the North Pole as well as the South Pole".
