The debate between the two rounds, which will take place this Wednesday, April 20, is an event that is always crucial and scrutinized by observers and voters.

It could thus allow Marine Le Pen to reverse a trend in the polls which has been rather unfavorable to her since her qualification in the second round on April 10, or Emmanuel Macron to increase his lead over his opponent.

What was the impact of the 2017 debate on voting intentions?

If the dynamic is rather in favor of Emmanuel Macron in recent days, the debate which will take place tomorrow is likely to reshuffle the cards.

On May 3, 2017, when Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen were already face to face during the debate between the two rounds, the RN candidate presented herself there with a favorable dynamic in the polls, up 5 points between its qualification in the second round and the day before the debate, increased from 36 to 41% of voting intentions according to

Elable

.

The last poll of the campaign, published the day after the debate, had been less favorable to him.

She had thus lost 3 percentage points, regressing to 38% favorable voting intentions, as shown in our graph below.

Emmanuel Macron finally won on May 6, 2017, with 66.1% of the votes cast against 33.9% for his rival.

It will therefore be crucial for the two candidates to approach and master this debate as best as possible, so the impact will certainly be reflected the next day in the polls that the various institutes will publish.
