Pakistani airstrikes have killed almost 50 people in Afghanistan, according to the authorities, most of them women and children.

An official told the AFP news agency on Sunday that 41 civilians were killed and more than 20 injured in the previous day's attacks in Khost province in the east of the country.

Six fatalities were reported from Kunar Province, also in eastern Afghanistan.

The attacks were initially not confirmed by the Pakistani military.

However, the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad on Sunday called on Afghanistan's ruling Taliban to take "tough measures" against extremist fighters.

They keep attacking Pakistan from Afghanistan.

In the border area between the two countries, violence had recently increased again.

After taking power in August last year, the radical Islamic Taliban pledged not to give shelter to any extremist groups in Afghanistan.

However, the border area with Pakistan has long been a safe haven for militant groups.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) movement, among others, is active in Pakistan.

In December, the Pakistani Taliban canceled a ceasefire with the government.

Since then there have been several attacks on soldiers and police officers in the country.
