Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal sought to reassure employees during their meeting with management Thursday, saying that the company would not be "hostage" to anyone, due to news of Elon Musk's bid to buy the company, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The meeting came after news that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had offered to buy the social media company for $43 billion.

Agrawal told the staff that the board was continuing to review Musk's proposal, but that the information he could share with them - the staff - was limited.

During the question and answer session, a question was asked: How did the company reach the decision to grant Musk a seat on the board of directors?

"Are we going to start inviting just all the billionaires to the board?" said one employee.

This is according to part of the minutes of the meeting received by Reuters.

Agrawal responded that the board acted in the best interest of shareholders and said, "I have a strong view that those who criticize our service, we must listen so that we can learn and improve."

Another employee asked Agrawal what he thought of Musk's definition of free speech, and whether it was in line with how Twitter handled the concept.

Agrawal did not address the question directly, saying that much of the company's work has been focused on continually improving the "health of posted conversations" on Twitter.

Earlier, Agrawal said he believed "Twitter symbolizes more than one human being".

A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the meeting, to Reuters.
