Shooting in a mall in South Carolina, USA

12 people were injured, 10 of them with gunshot wounds, during Saturday's shooting at a shopping mall in Columbia, South Carolina, and three people have been detained, US police said.

Columbia Police Chief William Holbrooke said the shooting at the Columbiana Mall was not believed to be an indiscriminate act of violence but the result of a "kind of conflict" between a group of armed individuals who knew each other.

Few details were available about the incident, but local media reported a heavy police and emergency presence at the mall, located about ten miles north of downtown Columbia, the state capital.

No one was killed in the accident.

But ten people were shot and eight of them were taken to area hospitals.

Holbrooke said in a press briefing hours after the accident that two of them are in a critical but stable condition, and six are in a stable condition.

He added that the ages of the injured ranged between 73 and 15 years.

Two other people were injured in the "stampede" of people who were running for safety.

Holbrooke said at least three people who were carrying firearms were found inside the mall.

He said three people had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
