In Ghana's capital Accra, fishing boats are crowded.

Domestic fishing takes place mainly from large canoe-shaped wooden boats.

Isaac Norbi has been fishing since he was a child.

- Fishing has dropped a lot.

It is not at all like it was before, he says when SVT visits the port.

China has the world's largest fishing fleet and it operates in large parts of the world.

Exactly how many Chinese trawlers go off the coast of West Africa is unknown, but this has long been warned against overfishing in the region due to extensive illegal and unregulated fishing.

Ghana has been criticized for not doing enough to curb illegal fishing.

Corruption is suspected and last year the European Commission handed out its second so-called yellow card to Ghana for the shortcomings.

Next to the port of Ghana are large trawlers in a fenced area.

They carry the Ghanaian flag, but according to the London-based organization Environmental Justice Foundation, which investigated the ownership, secret Chinese financiers are behind 90 percent of the ownership.

- The Chinese owners use front people here in Ghana to access and fish here, says Charles Smith at the Environmental Justice Foundation in Ghana.

Fishing is in danger of collapsing

It is estimated that Ghana loses up to $ 14 million each year in hidden ownership licenses.

And the Environmental Justice Foundation has previously exposed extensive illegal practices among trawlers.

Warnings are now being issued that fishing may completely collapse due to overfishing.

- The stock of smaller fish has decreased by 80 percent in the last two decades.

These are the livelihoods of the domestic fishing industry.

If this continues, the fishery will collapse very soon, says Charles Smith.
