CAIRO -

Social networking sites reflected a state of anger after the Egyptian Minister of Endowments, Muhammad Mukhtar Gomaa, announced that it was not allowed to perform Tahajjud and i'tikaf prayers in mosques in the last ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan, for the third year in a row.

Gomaa justified his decision by continuing the precautionary measures and social distancing measures, which some saw as an unreal reason in light of what the authorities themselves announced about a clear decline of the Corona virus in Egypt in the past period.

The pioneers of social networking sites in Egypt poured out their anger on the minister, who has always stirred controversy in many situations. Some of them even accused him of restricting mosques for the benefit of the security authorities.

For the third year in a row: Who is behind a decision that decided to ban Tahajjud and Itikaf prayers in mosques in Egypt during the month of Ramadan?

They justified the past two years with the virus of #Corona, and they did not find any justification this year except for imposing the order by security force, and the informant, Mukhtar Jumaa, Minister of Endowments, obligated the imams of mosques to prevent prayer.

Is it justified?

official decisions

Egyptian media reported that the Minister of Endowments met with ministry officials, yesterday, Friday, during which he stressed the need to follow up on not placing any donation boxes in mosques, adhering to the time and subject of the Friday sermon, and not allowing mosques to open after Tarawih prayers until dawn prayers.

The minister said, in the meeting, that whoever wants to perform the ritual prayer should do it in his home, and it is desirable that we live in our homes with night prayers, remembrance and recitation of the Noble Qur’an, and that there is no room for opening mosques for i’tikaaf or tahajjud this year in light of the continuation of precautionary measures and social distancing measures.

He also indicated that "the Eid prayer will be held in major mosques and mosques in which Friday prayers are held, and the controls for their establishment last year in mosques, not in squares, due to the possibility of applying social distancing measures in mosques and the difficulty of controlling their application or in the stampede of worshipers on the squares," he said.

Anger on social media

A number of them wondered about the difference between Tarawih prayer and Tahajjud prayer with regard to the procedures of the Corona virus, so that some of them mocked the ability of the virus to differentiate between Tarawih prayer and Qiyaam prayer, and how it is active in mosques alone without the rest of the crowded places, and it spreads in the Eid prayer arenas and does not It is spread in cafes and stadiums.

While some called on the President of the Republic, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to reconsider the decisions, especially the decision to prevent Eid prayers in the squares, some and some of the subordinates of the Minister of Endowments praised the minister’s decisions “aimed at serving the Islamic call and preserving the nation’s capabilities, security and stability.”
