Yemen..The opening of roads and crossings in Hodeidah and Taiz has begun

Local sources in Al-Hodeidah governorate confirmed that roads had begun between the governorate’s districts in implementation of the terms of the UN armistice agreement, while similar sources in Taiz expected arrangements to open the western crossing of the city, while Houthi militia violations of the truce continued.

And local sources in Al-Hodeidah governorate reported the start of paving the roads linking the governorate’s districts, in preparation for their opening in implementation of the UN armistice, noting that it was agreed to open the road linking the districts of Hays and Al-Jarrahi, south of Al-Hodeidah.

The sources confirmed that bulldozers have started work to remove the dirt piles and barriers and fill in the trenches that were dug on the road during the last period, in preparation for its opening, pointing out that the process takes three days.

In Taiz, local sources and others in the Roads Maintenance Fund stated that there are understandings to open the western crossing of the city, linking the area of the ghee and soap factory, and the Bir Basha area, which is known as the “Ghorab” port, but work has not begun to remove the obstacles to vehicle traffic.

This coincides with the existence of agreements with the Houthi militia to complete the implementation of the terms of the armistice that began at the beginning of this month, including the part related to opening crossings and roads to civilians in all areas, including the besieged governorate of Taiz since 2015.

In his briefing to the UN Security Council yesterday, the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stressed the importance of working hard to lift the siege on the city of Taiz.

He pointed to the existence of a new round of Yemeni negotiations after the holy month of Ramadan between all parties under the auspices of the United Nations, stressing the need of Yemenis for an effective government to get out of the economic crisis.

In addition, the chief UN humanitarian affairs official, Martin Griffiths, said that the Houthi militia has not fulfilled its promises to release two UN employees in Sanaa who were kidnapped 5 months ago, indicating that efforts are being made to secure the release of 5 others kidnapped since last February in Abyan governorate.

On the ground, the Yemeni army and tribes thwarted Houthi attacks on the fronts south and west of Ma’rib, according to field sources, confirming that a Houthi attack towards the Faliha fronts, Qarn al-Bor and the desert surrounding Yesm Reesh camp on the southern axis of Marib, and another towards the al-Mashjah and al-Kasara fronts in the western mountainous axis, was thwarted.

The sources indicated that the militias used artillery and machine guns in their attacks, while sending drones to the skies of the liberated areas in the Wadi District, which includes the Safer oil area.

The government forces had thwarted 8 separate Houthi attacks on the fronts of Marib, Hajjah and Hodeidah, noting that more than 75 violations were committed by the militias on various fronts.

On the western coast, the military media of the joint forces confirmed that Houthi infiltration attempts on all lines of contact had been thwarted, which had incurred heavy losses.

The commander of the Seventh Military Region, Major General Muhammad al-Muntasir, indicated that the militias continued to launch their attacks and mobilize fighters and combat equipment towards the Marib fronts, stressing, in statements to the media center of the Yemeni army, the commitment of the government forces to the UN truce.

In the capital, Sana'a, the militias intensified their security presence in the city's streets, and deployed armored vehicles, combat vehicles and armed elements in a number of streets remarkably during the past hours.

And local sources reported that the massive spread of the Houthis comes on the back of the rampant conflict between its leaders from the first row against the background of the sharing of financial levies, the sharing of influence and control, and the intensification of differences between Houthi security leaders.

The militias in Sana'a also kidnapped the sports journalist, Abdul Karim Al-Razi, from a street in Haddah area, south of Sanaa, and took him to an unknown destination.

The militias also stormed the Al-Iman Mosque in the Nuqm neighborhood, southeast of the capital, and prevented Tarawih prayers there.

In Dhamar, a Houthi gunman killed an elderly man inside the Al-Khaba’i Mosque in Sayeh neighborhood, east of the city of Dhamar, the provincial capital.

In Ibb, the militias have closed 62 shops and 6 malls since the beginning of the month of Ramadan, against the background of their refusal to pay financial royalties described as large, in the context of a new campaign of extortion and levy carried out by the militias since the beginning of the holy month.
