Authorities have launched an investigation after a woman in the United States became pregnant after having sex with fellow inmates at a prison.

New Jersey.com reported on the 14th (local time) that two inmates at Edna Meihen Prison, the only female-only correctional facility in the state of New Jersey, were confirmed to be pregnant.

Pregnant inmates told the New Jersey Department of Justice that they had consensual sexual intercourse with a transgender inmate.

New Jersey last year enacted a law giving inmates the right to choose a correctional facility based on their gender, not the biological sex they were determined at birth.

This opened the way for sexual minorities such as transgender people to spend their lives in prison with inmates of the sex of their choice, regardless of their biological sex.

Edna Meichen Prison, where more than 800 inmates are currently incarcerated, holds 27 transgender people.

However, it is explained that if an inmate claims that she is a transgender woman, she will be living with a woman, as the law does not state that she must undergo gender reassignment surgery.

New Jersey's position is that this law was enacted to protect the rights and interests of sexual minorities.

But last year, two female inmates at Edna Meichen Prison filed a lawsuit demanding a transfer from a transgender person who had not undergone surgery.

After reporting their sexual identity as transgender in the complaint, they allege that some male inmates imprisoned in women's prisons were molested and attempted to have sexual contact.
