Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to an influx of refugees, and according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, 4.7 million people have left the country since February 24.

The Swedish Migration Agency presented its forecast a month ago and now, together with the country's county administrative boards, a plan has been made for the approximately 76,000 Ukrainians who are expected to flee to Sweden before 1 July, when a new law regulating the distribution between municipalities enters into force.

The Swedish Migration Agency's criteria

In its distribution, the Swedish Migration Agency has based itself on five criteria.

  • the municipality's population size

  • labor market conditions

  • number of unaccompanied children

  • number of asylum seekers staying in the municipalities

  • settlement for those in need of protection who are already staying in the municipalities

- We want to avoid the situation that arose in connection with the refugee reception in the years 2015–2016, when some municipalities were disproportionately heavily burdened, says Magnus Önnestig, head of department at the Swedish Migration Board.

Most to Eskilstuna

Exactly what the distribution of refugees should look like in Sörmland will now be a matter for the municipalities and the county administrative board to have a dialogue about.

According to the forecast, Eskilstuna, by far the largest municipality in the county, will receive the most Ukrainians, while Vingåker together with Flen will be the municipalities where the least number is allocated.

Already today, 841 Ukrainians who have been granted a residence permit under the EU Refugee Directive live in Sörmland.
