Jean-Yves Le Drian visits Algiers to "strengthen bilateral relations"

The visit of the French Foreign Minister had not been announced.

Jean-Yves Le Drian met Wednesday evening with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the presence of his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

The Algerian presidency then announced the meeting in a press release on Thursday morning.

Paris, for its part, specifies that it is a working visit to strengthen bilateral relations.

This is the minister's second trip to Algiers in 5 months

Jean Yves Le Drian's trip to Algiers is, according to Paris, a continuation of that of last December which had initiated discussions to relaunch bilateral relations and with a view to reactivating the high-level intergovernmental committee between the two country (CIHN) which has not met since 2017. 

A meeting of this committee scheduled for last year was postponed at the last minute due to political tensions.

Relations between Paris and Algiers are currently experiencing

, after the diplomatic crisis of 2021 following President Macron's statements on Algeria and colonization.

Jean-Yves Le Drian and Algerian officials mainly discussed sensitive issues in the region, terrorism and security challenges such as in the Sahel and Libya.

They also discussed stability in the Mediterranean and in Africa.

The crisis in Ukraine was also on the menu for discussion, as well as its repercussions on security in Europe and its energy supply.

According to the Algerian press, the head of French diplomacy discussed in Algiers the possibility of transporting Algerian gas to Paris.
