The reason for the crisis in the egg industry is increased costs for feed, diesel and energy and a consequence of the war in Ukraine.

This has led to the industry organization Swedish Eggs warning that the country's degree of self-sufficiency in eggs may decrease.

Henrik Larsén has worked with egg production, just outside Västerås, since the early 1980s.

Today, there are 50,000 laying hens on the farm, which produces upwards of 45,000 eggs per day.

This is the first time he is experiencing such a major economic crisis in the industry as it is now.

- Trade is the big culprit in the drama.

The production cost we have now, the customers out in the store have to pay, otherwise we can not continue, says Henrik Larsén.

Trade has promised to raise prices

According to Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius, operations manager at Swedish Eggs, the trade has promised to raise the prices of eggs, but she does not know when it will happen.

According to her, only price increases in grocery stores can "save" the egg producers.

This is something that Henrik Larsén agrees with.

The government's financial support promised to farmers and specifically to the poultry industry does not go far enough, according to the egg industry and Henrik Larsén.

- It is so marginal because these cost increases are so enormously powerful.

There needs to be a price increase of 45-50 öre per egg in the market, says Henrik Larsén.
