Secretary of State to the Minister of Justice, Lord David Wolfson, tendered his resignation on Wednesday April 13, after a year and a half in government.

In his letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the lawyer justifies his decision by

the “scale, context and nature

” of breaches of Covid laws in government and the official response of the executive to the fines received.

In charge of human rights and the Constitution, David Wolfson was not a prominent member of the government, but his resignation is the first strong message from a member of the Conservative party since Boris Johnson was fined.

For the moment, only two other Tory deputies have called on the Prime Minister to resign, without however addressing any letters of defiance to the party committee.

Unlike the Labor and Social Democrat opposition, the Conservatives seem to have convinced themselves that the war in Ukraine and the local elections next month do not constitute a favorable context for an internal election.

Boris Johnson could still receive one or more other fines for other Downing Street parties.
