A 26-year-old has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of British MP David Amess.

Judge Nigel Sweeney at London's Old Bailey Criminal Court said when the man was sentenced on Wednesday that it was the right decision that the man had no prospect of parole.

The Somali-born Briton was found guilty on Monday of stabbing the Conservative MP to death in October 2021 during a citizens' consultation in his constituency in the southeastern English county of Essex.

The act caused horror across the country and triggered a new debate about the safety of MPs.

The 26-year-old man is considered a lone Islamist and supporter of the Islamic State terrorist militia.

He says he committed the murder to avenge Amess's approval of airstrikes on Syria in 2014 and 2015.

During the trial, he showed no remorse.
