The war in Ukraine has obviously given a boost to “troll factories (or farms)”, these organized groups paid to massively disseminate partial information.

And this is especially true on social networks which can become a powerful tool for manipulating public opinion when exploited to amplify and spread false information…

From manipulation campaigns to crypto scams

Twitter, for example, saw the creation of more than 38,000 new accounts on February 24, the day Russian tanks entered Ukraine (against a daily average of around 12,000 in the weeks preceding)!

But Russian trolls are not the only ones responsible for this overactivity since Ukrainian campaigns have also been observed demanding, for example, the establishment of a no-fly zone.

That said, not all of the suspicious activity was directly related to the conflict.

Researchers have found that keywords related to Ukraine have also been used to distribute spam, including cryptocurrency scams claiming to raise funds to support the Ukrainian resistance.
