Today's 54-year-old Oleg Deripaska is a top-rated physics student from Moscow who quickly realized that it was possible to make money after the fall of the Soviet Union.

When Boris Jelstin sold Russian natural resources at the request of the West, Deripaska bought aluminum smelters in the 1990s.

He founded Rusal - which later became the world's largest aluminum producer and became the owner of the Kubal factory in Sundsvall.

He also founded the investment giant Basic Element, which today owns everything from Russian hydropower plants to airports.

Called Putin "favorite industrialist"

Deripaska has long been closely linked to power in the Kremlin.

He was married to the daughter of Boris Yeltsin's close adviser Valenin Yumashev, who in turn is married to one of Yeltsin's daughters.

Deripaska's relationship with Yeltsin's successor is also strong.

Deripaska has been called Putin's "favorite industrialist" and he is one of the few oligarchs that Putin turns to regularly.

At the time of the invasion of Ukraine, his fortune, according to Forbes magazine, was valued at about SEK 26 billion.

Deripaska himself is happy to emphasize his great interest in ballet and horse riding.

For example, he sits on the board of the legendary Bolshoi Theater and he owns several horses at his home near Moscow.

Several accusations - deny

But there is another picture.

The journalist network OCCRP revealed in 2018 that, among other things, Deripaska bought passports in the EU country Cyprus.

Sanctions documents from the US Department of Justice describe Deripaska being investigated for money laundering, he has been accused of bribery, extortion, murder and links to organized crime.

According to several experts, he is also one of those who manage Putin's private wealth.

Deripaska has also been accused of participating in Russia's involvement in the 2016 US election. A spokesman for Deripaska has said that all the information is "dirty lies".

SVT has searched for him without results.

Oleg Deripaska, whose half-billion home in Belgrave in London was recently occupied by protesters, has been on Britain's sanctions lists since March 10 this year.

According to Deripaska, it is not he but family members who own the London property.

The house is owned on paper by a company in the British Virgin Islands.
