“If Europe opposes American demands to abandon Russian gas, it will be told that it does not support Ukraine enough, does it formally, and behind the scenes “selfishly” concludes energy deals with Russia,” Rocha said.

He concluded that European countries are now in a hopeless situation.

“The United States will put pressure on the EU to hit Russia, in the words of the Americans, “even more painfully.”

It is clear why the European Union is not particularly in a hurry to take measures of this kind, because this “pain” will be felt by the bloc itself,” he concluded.

Earlier, the European Union adopted the fifth package of anti-Russian sanctions in connection with the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine.

In accordance with it, from August 2022, the EU introduces a ban on the import of coal and other solid fossil fuels if they are exported from Russia.

In turn, a member of the US House of Representatives Marcy Kaptur called on "all countries" of the world to stop importing oil, coal and gas from Russia.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev expressed concern that the United States is ready to "bite its teeth" into the European energy market.
