Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821) was the first woman born on American soil to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

Coming from a wealthy Protestant family, she was not destined to become a saint...

Born Bayley, Elizabeth married businessman William Seton at the age of 19 and gave birth to five children.

But in 1803, her husband died in Italy, carried away by tuberculosis.

Elizabeth then turned to Catholicism and soon founded the first Catholic parochial school in the United States.

Until her death at the age of 44, Mother Seton worked tirelessly to develop this community.

She was canonized in 1975 by Pope Paul VI.
