• Nantes residents mainly voted for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Emmanuel Macron and Yannick Jadot in the first round of the presidential election.

  • The socialist Anne Hidalgo, whose mayor of Nantes was the campaign manager, totaled only 2.5% of the vote.

In great difficulty at the national level, the left has nevertheless resisted well in Nantes, the sixth city in France led by a socialist mayor for more than thirty years.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon created a sensation by coming in first with 33% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election, nearly ten points more than his French score.

A great performance, all the more so if we compare it to the results of the 2017 presidential election (25.4%) and the 2021 municipal elections (8.9% for Nantes en Commun, support from LFI).

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is ahead of Emmanuel Macron who, with 29.6% of the vote, also does a little better than nationally.

Far behind, the third is surprising since it is Yannick Jadot.

The ecologist totals 10% of the votes while he obtains less than half in the rest of France.

Marine Le Pen, who has never really performed in the City of the Dukes, is fifth with 8.1% of the vote, just ahead of Eric Zemmour (6.1%).

Valérie Pécresse (LR) only totals 4.8% of the vote (François Fillon had more than 20% in 2017), but places herself ahead of the socialist Anne Hidalgo (2.5%) whose campaign director n was other than... the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland.

A "profound failure" for Johanna Rolland

“The sterile division of the left in recent years, our inability to unite our forces in a common project of the left of government, republican,

progressive, social and ecological, results in a new and profound failure”, reacted Johanna Rolland in a statement.

"The challenge is to initiate a profound overhaul now for tomorrow to be heard again by the French (...)", continued the mayor of Nantes, calling "for the Republican vote in favor of Emmanuel Macron".

In the rest of the Nantes metropolis, Jean-Luc Mélenchon also came out on top in several municipalities in the south of the Loire, such as Rezé, Bouguenais, la Montagne or Indre.

But on the scale of Pays-de-la-Loire, it is the outgoing president who is ahead in the five departments and comes first in most large cities, such as Angers, Le Mans, Laval and in municipalities of Loire-Atlantique traditionally voting on the left, like Saint-Herblain and the port city of Saint-Nazaire.
