The Republicans were preparing for a disappointment, they experienced a real debacle.

Only 4.79% of French people voted for Valérie Pécresse in the first round of the presidential election.

This Monday morning, the barons of the right met at the headquarters of the Republicans to discuss the future of the party and decide on the position to adopt for the second round.

By way of comparison, Valérie Pécresse, with her 4.79% in the first round of the presidential election, attracted almost 10 million fewer voters than Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. At 10 a.m. on Monday, the barons of right gathered at the headquarters of the Republicans.

Because the challenge is neither more nor less to avoid the death of the party created by the former head of state.

With the score obtained this Sunday, the political space of the Republicans has been considerably reduced and urgently, LR must indeed answer this question: what position to adopt in the second round to guarantee the future of the party?

Laurent Wauquiez wants to favor "a common position"

During this meeting, Laurent Wauquiez took the floor to call for respect for all sensitivities within the party.

"Let's not try to pit one camp against the other. Let's build a common position that brings us together without excluding anyone," advised the president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

His position is, on the whole, shared, because the Republicans now have the legislative elections in their sights, where they will have to present, according to Laurent Wauquiez, a project soluble neither in extremism nor in macronism.

The future of the Republicans is at the heart of the discussions, according to testimony from a party executive to Europe 1.
