A skier survived Sunday after being swept away by an avalanche in the town of Tignes (Savoie).

Rescuers found him, alive and conscious, in the early afternoon, reports

The 160 m wide snowslide started at an altitude of 2,700 m and traveled more than 500 m.

Mountain rescuers were immediately notified that a skier had been swept away by the avalanche and was buried.

Trackers and helicopters were quickly mobilized.

Eight minutes in the snow

Thanks to his DVA (avalanche victim detector), the victim was quickly found by the trackers.

It was a man in his sixties, who had just spent eight minutes buried in snow.

The man was conscious and showed no apparent trauma when rescued.

After being examined, he was evacuated to the hospital, where he passed a battery of controls to check his state of health.
