Pending a clear election result, with the help of a poll on Sunday, we can predict that there will be a second round, where incumbent Social Liberal Emmanuel Macron and right-wing nationalist opponent Marine Le Pen will fight for the post of France's new president on April 24.

According to the poll, which is not a clear election result, Macron received 28.1 percent of the vote while Le Pen received 23.3.

Left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon was not far behind with 20.1 percent.

Thanks during the vigil

Le Pen was the first to thank the people.

- The French people have spoken and honored me by qualifying for the second round, against the incumbent president.

Let me express my deepest gratitude to the millions of voters who have given me their trust, Marine Le Pen said during his vigil on Sunday night.

After a while, it was time for Macron to thank his countrymen who voted for him:

- Your support honors and engages me, and holds me accountable.

You can trust me to carry out the successful project we have campaigned for, says Macron.

He also thanks all his eleven rival candidates in the presidential election by name, and asks his audience to applaud them as well.

- I want to extend a hand to all those who want to work for France, to invent something new, to build our country together in the coming years.

That is our task.

According to a first opinion poll commissioned by the French public service on election night, Macron is predicted to win the decisive round in two weeks, with a narrow margin of 54 percent.

Zemmour gets under ten percent

Someone who did not do as well was the radical right-wing nationalist candidate Éric Zemmour, who received only seven percent of the polls.

The fact that he was convicted of incitement against an ethnic group in January (when he expressed himself racistly during a television debate in 2020) may have affected his chances.

But it did not dampen his spirits too much, and Zemmour spoke out to thank those who voted for him:

- I interpret every single one of your voices as a cry from a people who do not want to die.

That you were two million who supported a man who came from nowhere means that you have heard me.

It is something basic that can not be forgotten in the coming days, or the years to come.

Your votes will never be ignored again.

Later in the night, the final election results for the first round will be reported.
