After the dismissal of Imran Khan.. Pakistan's parliament to hold a session on Monday to choose a new prime minister

Pakistan's acting parliament speaker said the parliament will hold a session on Monday to select a new prime minister after Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in a vote of no confidence today.

Imran Khan was sacked on Sunday after losing a parliamentary vote of no-confidence after a weeks-long political crisis.

It was not immediately clear who the National Assembly would choose as a new prime minister, but opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif would almost certainly succeed Khan as Pakistan's prime minister.

Khan, 69, tried by various means to remain in office, including dissolving parliament and calling early elections, but the Supreme Court issued a decision in which it considered all measures taken last week invalid, and ordered the National Assembly to convene and hold a vote of no-confidence.

Khan did not attend the session, and he lost the majority in the 342-member assembly after some of his allies in the ruling coalition defected, and members of his party, the Insaf Movement, announced that they would vote in favor of no-confidence in him.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi responded by accusing the opposition of dragging the country down a dangerous path, saying that "history will reveal all those who paved the way for the overthrow of this government," amid boos from opponents who chanted "Vote, vote."

The opposition had previously expressed its support for early elections, but only after the departure of Imran Khan.

It is supposed to call for the organization of these elections by October 2023. But once it takes power the opposition can determine the electoral timetable it wants and influence a series of cases brought against it during the era of Imran Khan.

The Electoral Commission believes that it needs seven months to organize the elections, according to the Pakistani media.
