Faced with the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, the city of Shanghai (China) has taken measures.

She has been completely confined since Tuesday.

Thus, the streets are empty, no more vehicles circulate on the roads, making the third most populated city on the planet a ghost town.

No less than 26 million inhabitants are concerned, reports

Ouest-France

.

The restrictions began on Monday March 28.

For several weeks, China has been affected by a new wave of infections, in particular due to the Omicron variant.

And Shanghai has become the epicenter of these contaminations.

All the population tested

The authorities first set up confinement in two parts: the eastern part of the city, for five days, then the western part.

They thus tried to limit the economic impact of these measures.

On April 1, containment therefore began in the western part.

But the next day, the mayor announced that this confinement was finally maintained, more or less strictly, in almost all of the eastern part.

At the same time, massive screening work is carried out by the army and health workers.

Positive people were isolated, including children.

Thus, thousands of inhabitants were quarantined in centers deemed rudimentary.

A “zero Covid” policy

According to Bloomberg, this confinement was badly experienced by the inhabitants:

“The frustration and anger are palpable, in messages published on social networks”

.

In particular, food shortages have been noted.

In view of the results of the massive screening, which led to an increase in the number of cases, the confinement was extended to the whole city on Tuesday.

A situation that is all the more difficult as the “zero Covid” strategy has been abandoned by many countries.

China continues to try to completely eliminate the virus from its territory, without learning to live with it.
