• Courts The judge admits the Anti-corruption complaint against Luis Medina and another businessman for earning six million selling masks to the Madrid City Council

  • Prosecutor's Office Accuses Luis Medina and another businessman of using a cousin of Almeida to earn six million selling masks

With the hangover from the possible involvement of the City Council in the espionage of the PP to Ayuso still in the background, the foundations of the municipal government are once again tottering.

This time for the six million in commissions that Luis Medina and Alberto Luceño, now called to testify by the Investigating Court number 47 of Madrid, obtained for the sale of medical supplies to the Consistory in March 2020.

A fact that has opened the second serious government crisis between PP and Citizens in just two months.

Only with the staging was it very clear.

The mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the deputy mayor, Begoña Villacís,

appeared at different press conferences after the Governing Board

, something unusual.

And more so when the Board leaves the Palacio de Cibeles like yesterday in Villa de Vallecas, where both usually go in pairs with the district councilor.

But it also showed in his speeches.

While the mayor refused to admit failures in control, he hid behind "the dramatic situation" of the first months of the pandemic and defended the work of the technicians of the Treasury Area, because

"they were only guided by the good faith of obtaining material as soon as possible."

before”

, the deputy mayor requested an external audit to study all the executed emergency contracts and a review of the controls, because “they have failed”.

Totally conflicting versions of

a story that began with two emails from Medina to the City Hall

.

According to Almeida's account, these emails arrived at the Mayor's Office on March 18 and 19.

In them, the businessman provided his mobile, which was then transferred to the Security and Emergency Area and, later, to the technicians in charge of the negotiation.

But

the mayor also recognized yesterday a call from his cousin, Carlos Martínez-Almeida, to the general coordinator of the Mayor's Office, Matilde García Duarte

, the alderman's right-hand man, to request that contact.

However, Almeida assured yesterday that he was "unrelated" to these events and that

his only contact with Medina was reduced to a call in April to thank him for the donation of 187,000 masks

.

In the middle of that month, these and the request for the extra costs arrived: one million masks, 2.5 million gloves and 750,000 tests.

A contingent that would end up being defective in part, a fact that the City Council was aware of due to

the complaints of the Municipal Police, who warned of the difficulties in breathing with the masks and the poor quality of the gloves

, which barely went up and broke. with ease, according to sources consulted by EL MUNDO.

With that order, Medina and Luceño obtained the six million that were spent on high-end cars, luxury watches, a yacht, a vacation in Marbella and a home in Pozuelo de Alarcón.

Events condemned by the mayor and the deputy mayor, who did agree that the City Council "will claim every last euro" of the operation.

But that does not mitigate the government crisis.

In the mayor's team, the solo appearance of Villacís has not gone down well, where he also threw several darts at his government partner.

The deputy mayor slipped that she "has no easements" and that "no area of Citizens is involved"

, in a clear allusion to the PP that manages the Treasury Area, in charge of centralizing the purchase of the material.

"I can guarantee you that they have not contacted anyone from Ciudadanos," added the leader of Cs.

Even at first, Villacís allowed himself to flirt with a possible rupture of the Government if the PP did not comply with his demands to audit the contracts, but at the time he discarded the motion of censure.

Because, as he explained, "the presence of Ciudadanos guarantees that there is transparency", since it

is a party that "was born to fight against crony capitalism", they are not "scavengers", and "with the data that is known, it is not appropriate »

Make the motion demanded weeks ago by the opposition.

“We are not going to let the PP govern alone.

(...) There is a good government but for it to survive there must be co-responsibility».

For his part,

Almeida accused the left of taking out "the meat grinder, the people grinder" against him, "despite being exonerated"

, while "he does not ask for the resignation" of Mónica Oltra for "covering up an alleged crime of sexual abuse" or Ada Colau for "declaring as accused of an alleged plot of corruption of contracts."
