Sean O'Brien also played 11 years for Leinster before joining London Irish, his current side.
O'Brien was also named European Player of the Year in the 2010/2011 season.
"After much consideration and conversations with my family and friends, I am able to announce that I have decided to retire from professional playing at the end of the season," O'Brien said in a statement. .
"I'm happy to have had so many great moments in my career. Internationally, I'm honored to have been capped 56 times for Ireland," he added.
