During a routine check-up on March 11, growth of salmonella was detected in an endoscope at the endoscopy clinic at the university hospital.

The instrument had been used in gastroscopy, an examination of the stomach, and it was immediately taken out of use, the hospital writes in a press release.

- It is very unfortunate that patients are exposed to infection in connection with examination.

Another 70 patients have undergone gastroscopy with the current endoscope.

They will now be contacted to get information, to check that they are well and in some cases to do a control culture, says Stefan Santén, operations manager for surgery and gastroenterology at Skåne University Hospital.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and sometimes vomiting.

If you become infected, it is most common to become ill within 1-3 days after the time of infection, but sometimes it can take up to about a week.
