After America, Europe imposes sanctions on Putin's two daughters

After the US sanctions on them, the European Union and Britain imposed sanctions on the two adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of a new package of measures targeting Russia due to its war on Ukraine.

The European Union has included Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova on its updated list of individuals facing asset freezes and travel bans, according to two EU officials from two different EU countries, who spoke to The Associated Press.

On Friday, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the daughter of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, stressing that it wanted to cut back "from the extravagant lifestyle of circles close to the Kremlin."

A statement from the British Foreign Office stated that under the decision, Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova, Putin's two daughters by his ex-wife Lyudmila, as well as Lavrov's daughter Ekaterina Vinokurova, are prevented from entering Britain while their potential assets are frozen there.

The move by the European bloc and Britain follows a similar move by the United States two days ago.

A senior official in the US administration said that Washington is imposing sanctions on Russia as a price for the war on Ukraine, referring to the imposition of sanctions on the two daughters of President Putin and the wife of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Meanwhile, Latvia said it had blacklisted 15 citizens of Russia and Belarus on the grounds that their activities posed a threat to the country's national security.

The Latvian State Security Service - the counterintelligence agency - submitted a list of nine Russians and six Belarusian citizens to the Minister of the Interior, Maria Golubeva.

On Friday, the state security service said the list included people "who may be involved in obtaining intelligence information or providing support for Russia's foreign policy interests."

He added that among them are those who express their support for the Kremlin despite the crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.
