A man in his forties died Wednesday morning while in police custody at the Narbonne police station (Aude), said Eric Camous, the public prosecutor, who opened an investigation to determine the causes of death.

The forties had been arrested overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

He was suspected of attacking a store window while intoxicated.

The man was then seen by a doctor, who declared his state of health compatible with his police custody, the public prosecutor of Narbonne told AFP.

Put in a drunk tank, he remained asleep.

The police went to see him for the first time and found that he was still sleeping.

Returning a second time, they found him dead.

“We are awaiting the autopsy,” the prosecutor said on Thursday.
