22 years ago, after graduating from Anhui Agricultural University majoring in freshwater aquaculture, Wang Benlong came to work at the Wuhe County Aquatic Technology Extension Station.

Because of his professional counterpart, he considers himself particularly lucky.

"Walking thousands of times is not as good as the two banks of the Huai River. The five rivers are beautiful and crab fat, suitable for fish and shrimp."

"In the past few days, crayfish has been on the market, and it can sell for more than 30 yuan per pound, which is much higher than the income from farming in the past!" A few days ago, in Dagang Village, Tuohu Township, Wuhe County, the rice and shrimp joint breeding base, Anhui Run The staff of Bo Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. are fishing for crayfish.

"The rice-shrimp co-cultivation model has brought great changes to Dagang Village." Wang Benlong said that Dagang Village is adjacent to Tuohu Lake, and the village has realized the transfer of the whole village, with about 5,000 mu of land to promote the scale of rice-shrimp and rice-crab co-cultivation. Agriculture has not only driven 200 villagers, including 62 poverty alleviation households, to achieve a steady increase in income, but also led the whole village to embark on a path of green and sustainable industrial revitalization.

Wang Benlong said that the growth cycle of crayfish is about 40 days.

The shrimp seedlings put in these few days can be harvested at the end of May, and rice is planted in early June, finally achieving a double harvest of rice and shrimp.

What are the economic benefits of rice and shrimp co-culture?

Wang Benlong calculated the account: the average output of one mu of paddy field shrimp is 200 catties, the average price per catty can reach 15 yuan, and an income of 3,000 yuan can be realized. The yield of rice per mu is about 1,200 catties. Referring to the unit price of 1.56 yuan per catty in 2021, the output value is nearly 2,000 yuan, the two items can add up to 5,000 yuan, which is much higher than the traditional rice and wheat cultivation in the past.

"Shrimp field uses less fertilizers and pesticides, which is healthier and more environmentally friendly." Wang Benlong said that shrimp field rice and crab field rice are very popular in the market, and the price of rice after processing is higher, which in a sense increases the benefits.

According to reports, driven by the rice-shrimp co-cultivation base, Dagang Village has 200 households with about 2,800 villagers participating in rice-shrimp co-cultivation through land transfer, capital investment, and base labor, with an annual per capita income increase of 4,000 yuan.

After the rice and shrimp market has entered a stable period, Wang Benlong is actively promoting the breeding models of rice crab, rice fish, rice loach, and rice soft-shelled turtle, and seeks the diversified development of comprehensive rice farming.
