The

European Parliament

has called for a

"total and immediate" veto

on imports of

Russian oil, coal, nuclear fuel and gas

, in a

non-binding resolution

adopted this Thursday that also asks that these sanctions be "accompanied" by a "plan " that guarantees the security and energy supply of the

European Union

.

The resolution has been endorsed by 513 MEPs, with 22 voices against and 19 abstentions.

"It is a very important moment and a significant stage.

Parliament's position is clear and it sends the strongest message of support to those on the front lines

," said the president of the European Parliament,

Roberta Metsola

, after the vote.

In parallel, they have urged the creation of a "fund similar to the

'Marshall plan'

to rebuild

Ukraine

after the war.

The

European Commission

proposed on Tuesday to toughen the punishment and stop purchases of Russian coal, which account for 45% of total EU coal imports, and

close European ports

to Russian ships.

The modalities of this fifth package of sanctions are currently being discussed between the representatives of the Member States.

However, Parliament has demanded to go further, but a possible

embargo

on

oil

, which represents

25% of total

EU imports of crude oil, and

Russian

gas , with

45% of the total

, divides the Member States .

The issue will be discussed on Monday during a meeting of European foreign ministers.

With this resolution, the MEPs also ask that

the supply of weapons

to Ukraine be "intensified", something that

Dmytro Kuleba

, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has once again called for this Thursday during his visit to the

NATO

headquarters in

Brussels

.

So far, the Union has agreed on an allocation of

1,000 million euros

to supply weapons to Kiev.

"It may seem like a lot, but one billion euros is what we pay

Putin

every day for the energy he provides us," said the head of European diplomacy,

Josep Borrell

.

Likewise, the Parliament has asked the EU to cut the access of

Russian

banks to the international financial system

SWIFT

and the

exclusion of Russia from the G20

and other multilateral organizations, such as the

United Nations Human Rights Council

or

Interpol

, among others.

This would constitute, in his opinion, "a clear signal that the attitude of the international community with respect to the aggressor State will not return to the previous situation."
