  • War in Ukraine Closes 'Novaya Gazeta', Russia's last independent newspaper

An unknown assailant has attacked the chief editor of the independent Russian newspaper 'Novaya Gazeta' and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dimitri Muratov, with paint.

The attack has been in a train car.

"They poured oil paint with acetone into the compartment.

My eyes burn terribly.

I'm on the Moscow-Samara train, there is an oily smell all over the car."

The attack seems related to the warmongering fervor in the country in the midst of a warlike conflict with which the newspaper 'Novaya Gazeta' has been highly critical.

"Muratov, this for our boys," shouted the aggressor, according to the veteran journalist on social networks.

'Novaya Gazeta' is considered

the last critical Russian newspaper

.

Last month it suspended its publication until the end of Vladimir Putin's military intervention in Ukraine after receiving several warnings from the country's censorship body.

"The departure [of the train] has already been delayed by 30 minutes. I will try to wash myself," Muratov said, reassuring his followers.

Muratov announced last month that

he will donate the money received for the award

to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund.

It is a symbolic gesture with which Muratov intends to highlight the millions of people displaced by the military offensive launched by Russia.

Muratov's attitude has fallen ill in the most nationalist sectors.
