The police had to intervene Wednesday evening in Marseille
to "avoid clashes" between Greek and Marseille supporters on the eve of the match between OM and PAOK Salonika in the Europa League Conference, said the police headquarters.
Damage to the Hôtel des Grecs
Some of the Greek supporters who arrived in Marseille on Wednesday evening did not respect the order taken as a security measure prohibiting them from arriving in a formed and identifiable group, explained the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters.
They were then "tracked by a group of Marseille supporters who left the Old Port, heading for their hotel".
In order to avoid clashes between the fans of the two teams, the public security police, supported by CRS, had to intervene "by using tear gas canisters", specified the same source.
Some Greek supporters tried to leave their hotel "to fight it out", but they were blocked by the police inside, "where they committed damage".
For their part, the Marseille supporters were dispersed and returned to the Old Port.
The supporters will meet Thursday evening at the Vélodrome stadium for the meeting between Olympique de Marseille and PAOK Salonika in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League Conference.
