Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a reform of the United Nations system or the abolition of Russia's membership, while Moscow accused the West of obstructing negotiations by provoking "hysteria" over the town of Bucha.

Zelensky added - before a Security Council session on the situation in Ukraine - that the Russians pursued a policy of destruction and killing in Ukraine as well as in different parts of the world.

Zelensky detailed the horrific scenes in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, saying that Moscow wanted to turn Ukraine into "silent slaves".

Zelensky also called for Russia to be expelled from the United Nations Security Council, and for the reform of the UN system so that "the veto does not mean the right to die."

He said that the Charter of the United Nations is in the crossfire of Russian violations.

sharp criticism of Russia

And the US delegate, Linda Thomas Greenfield, revealed that her country - in coordination with Ukraine and a number of UN member states - would seek to suspend Russia's membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he had asked the emergency relief coordinator to travel to Russia and Ukraine to press for a ceasefire.

Guterres added that the Russian war had caused great loss of life.

Today, Tuesday, the UN Security Council held an open session on the situation in Ukraine, and Britain - which chairs the Security Council - said it will work to ensure that the truth is heard about the war crimes committed by Russia.

The hearing comes after the British mission refused to hold a separate session on Monday called by Russia to discuss what Moscow called heinous provocations by Ukrainian extremists in Bucha.

And the President of the Council, the British Ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, saw - during a press conference she held on Monday - that she had responded to the Russian request by merging it with Tuesday's meeting, which was previously scheduled.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Tuesday praised Turkey for hosting peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and warned that a prolonged war would weaken global institutions dedicated to maintaining international peace and security.

"The war is now destroying Ukraine and threatening its future as well, and has damaged the security structure of Europe," DiCarlo said at the UN Security Council session on Tuesday.

Russian criticism of the West

The Russian delegate, Vasily Nebenzia, said that Britain misuses the presidency of the Council, describing these actions as a disgrace on British diplomacy.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of trying to derail negotiations between Russia and Ukraine by provoking "hysteria" over the town of Bucha, where Ukraine and the West say there is evidence of war crimes by Russia.

Moscow denies the accusation and describes the allegations as outrageous fraud.

European move

Today, Tuesday, the European Parliament held a session to discuss the escalatory steps to be taken against Russia.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an intensified package of sanctions against Russia, and told the European Parliament that this package includes the export sector, energy, technology and the naval fleet, in addition to expanding the ban on the banking sector to include 23% of the capacity of this sector.

It added that a ban would be imposed on Russia and Belarus in the technology and transportation sectors.
