Five months after the police surprised him at the door of his house in Lardero (La Rioja) with the body of Álex, 9 years old, in his arms, Francisco Javier Almeida has appeared before the magistrate investigating the circumstances of the crime.
As on previous occasions, Almeida has availed himself of his right not to testify, as indicated by the legal sources consulted.
He was the first of the round of statements designed by the judge instructing the case and has appeared by videoconference from the Segovia prison, where he was transferred a week after Álex's death.
At the hearing, which was held at the Provincial Court of Logroño, the father of the child, police officers and health workers who were present on the night of October 28, when Almeida allegedly deceived him from the Halloween party he was celebrating with his parents and his friends in a park in Lardero with the excuse of showing him some puppies.
He ended up suffocating her, according to the investigation.
The lawyer for the private and popular accusation, practiced by the 'Clara Campoamor' association, Alicia Redondo, has already announced that she will request the reviewable permanent prison for him and specified that tests are still being carried out.
After the crime, Almeida's criminal record was uncovered, with two previous convictions for murdering a real estate employee with special crudeness - murder with treachery - in 1998 and for abusing a minor five years earlier.
