It was at two o'clock in the afternoon in November that the police were alerted to a stairwell on Stora gatan in Västerås.
The man in his 30s received life-threatening injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery at Västmanland Hospital.
The prosecutor demanded an attempted murder or aggravated assault in the indictment.
However, Västmanland District Court chooses to classify the act as aggravated assault because the court considers that there is no indication that the 43-year-old was out to kill the man he stabbed.
The 43-year-old man admits to being stabbed, but says that he acted in self-defense.
